Ford Mustang Prototype Designs

They say history effects the future, and the Ford Mustang is a classic example. Today, we could have been driving a car that resembles a Mustang, but called something totally different. Would it have been as successful over 40 years later? On May 9th, 1962, the Ford Mustang was just a twinkle in Lee Iacocca's eye. On May 24th, Ford began building the first prototype Mustang I, but still did not resemble the first generation Mustang. The front grill emblem showed the most evidence of all the name changes the Mustang went through. We were so close to not driving a Mustang today. It went from "T-5," "Cougar," "Special Falcon," "Torino," and then the "Mustang" we all know today. This was going on until January 1964. Very close to the actual production of the 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang. The name choice may have not altered the fate of the Mustang, but some of the early body styles may have. An example was the grill opening and headlight design of the January 25th, 1963 prototype. There was not much to like about it. On the other hand, the August 2nd prototype was a cross between a Fastback and a Convertible. It may have worked. By the middle of 1966, Ford sold a Million Mustangs. Success!
